Fall is quickly approaching and will feature five of our most-important programs and signature events.
First up is the second Education to Employment Outlook Series: Upskilling in the Dallas Region, from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, at the DRC. In a tight labor market such as the Dallas Region, the need for skilled and diverse talent is ever growing. Employers are looking for ways to fill open positions in middle-skill jobs across company structures from IT to customer relations. Leaders from Generation, Per Scholas, YearUp, and Merit America will discuss upskilling talent in the region through innovative short-term workforce development programs for populations of workers who have traditionally been overlooked. Save the date to join DRC members and partners The ChildCare Group, PNC Bank, Early Matters Dallas, Dallas Citizens Council, Workforce Solutions of Dallas, United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and the Dallas Chapter of the Texas Association for the Education of Young Children (TAEYC), for a complimentary screening of the documentary “No Small Matter” on Sept. 4 at the Angelika Film Center Dallas (Mockingbird Station). “No Small Matter” showcases the importance of early education for young children, especially those living in low-income households. Immediately following the screening, a panel featuring local business, nonprofit and early education stakeholders will discuss early childhood education in the Dallas Region. Our 2019 State of Public Education annual signature luncheon will provide an update on statewide and regional public education issues from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, at the Hyatt Regency Dallas. Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath, a former Dallas ISD Trustee, returns to Dallas to keynote and provide insight on recent legislative changes for Texas school finance and accountability, and to discuss the progress and challenges of public education across our state. Following Morath’s keynote address, a panel of the region’s education leaders will showcase public education in North Texas. Presenting Sponsors are Texas Instruments Incorporated and Toyota. Especially exciting this year is the 20th Anniversary of our Principal for a Day program, which is set for Thursday, Oct. 10, in partnership with Dallas ISD and sponsored by Capital One Bank. During this enlightening day of collaboration, business and community leaders will witness the successes and challenges of our local public education system. Major goals of the program are to form ongoing partnerships between businesses and Dallas ISD and to create a better understanding of the school district. The day ends with a celebratory “After Class” reception for all participants and principals, also sponsored by Toyota.
