Engaging with Cultural Holidays in October: National Disability Employment Awareness Month

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Each October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) recognizes the valuable contributions of people with disabilities to workplaces and the broader U.S. economy while highlighting the importance of expanding employment opportunities and creating workplaces where people of all abilities can thrive.

The observance dates back to 1945, when it began as a weeklong national recognition of the contributions of people with physical disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the observance to a full month, broadening its focus over time to recognize people with a wide range of disabilities, including mental health conditions and other non-apparent disabilities. In 2001, Congress established the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), which assumed responsibility for NDEAM, including the development and promotion of its annual theme.

The 2026 NDEAM theme, “Celebrating Value and Talent,” builds upon last year’s theme while coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the United States. This year’s theme recognizes the skills, perspectives and contributions that Americans with disabilities bring to our workplaces and communities. It also provides an opportunity for employers and communities to reflect on how greater access to employment can strengthen both businesses and the workforce.

Engage in the workplace

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy offers a range of resources to help organizations strengthen disability inclusion in the workplace. For companies looking to take meaningful steps toward greater inclusion, a good place to start is by reviewing existing policies and practices to ensure they reflect a clear commitment to accessibility and an inclusive workplace culture. Organizations can also look beyond their own walls by partnering with local disability-focused organizations and nonprofits. These partnerships can provide valuable perspectives, expertise and resources to help companies better understand the experiences of people with disabilities and identify opportunities to create a more supportive workplace.

Employers can also reference the DRC’s Disability Inclusion Toolkit, presented by EY, for practical guidance and resources to help strengthen their inclusion efforts. By continuing to learn, evaluate current practices and engage with community partners, organizations can take intentional steps toward creating workplaces where employees of all abilities have the opportunity to thrive.

Additionally, The North Texas Disability Chamber is another valuable local resource for organizations looking to strengthen their disability inclusion efforts and build connections locally. Companies can engage with the Chamber, attend its events and connect with the other individuals and companies who are invested in learning directly from disability advocates, professionals and community partners across North Texas. Participating in these opportunities can help organizations continue their education, gain new perspectives and build meaningful relationships with those working to advance disability inclusion throughout the region.

October holidays to recognize

Indigenous Peoples’ Day, observed on October 12, recognizes and celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of Indigenous peoples and communities. It is also an opportunity to learn from Indigenous voices, support Indigenous-owned businesses and organizations and deepen our understanding of Indigenous history and culture. This day is one that can serve as a starting point for continued learning, connection and support throughout the year.
