Understanding Leadership Dallas

Being part of the Leadership Dallas program is a big commitment – but a commitment that reaps great benefits. Before you start applying to Leadership Dallas, please be sure you have a deep understanding of the process, commitment, and expectations for the program

Class Dates and Participation

Attending the overnight retreat, in its entirety, is mandatory if you are selected to participate in the program. At the retreat, class members receive an overview of requirements, are assigned to working committees, begin leadership development coursework and get to know their classmates. Following the retreat, we will meet one full day a month on a Friday to cover content related to critical issues facing the Dallas region. These dates have been selected for the Class of 2019 and are as follows:

(Leadership Dallas class members can miss no more than 16 hours of class days. The retreat in its entirety is mandatory.)

Application Fee

Each applicant is required to pay an application fee. Candidates, who complete an application by 5:00 PM on April 30, will be eligible to pay an “early action” application fee of $50. For applications received after 5:00 PM on April 30, the applicant must submit a $75 fee. Applications will be considered complete for review only if payment is submitted. Applicants will receive a link to pay the application fee online with a credit card only after the online application has been completed and submitted.

Leadership Dallas Tuition

The tuition fee for Leadership Dallas is $6,500. As a valued supporter, Dallas Regional Chamber members will receive a discounted tuition rate of $5,000. If your company is not currently a member but is interested in joining the DRC, please contact Meghan Kelley at mkelley@dallaschamber.org or 214.746.6614.

The tuition fee covers the cost of all program material, group transportation, hotel stay, facilities, and meals. Tuition is nonrefundable.


Financial assistance is available to participants who may not otherwise be able to participate. Partial scholarship funds are available, but are limited. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of documented financial need and availability of scholarship dollars. Proof of financial need may be requested. Request for financial assistance does not affect consideration for selection. Available scholarships are listed below.

Barry Barker Scholarship Fund

During the 1997-98 program year, Leadership Dallas lost a long-time friend, Barry Barker. Barry was a graduate of the first Leadership Dallas class, served as President of the Leadership Dallas Alumni Association, and chaired the curriculum committee. After his death, the Dallas Regional Chamber and the Leadership Dallas Alumni Association renamed its scholarship fund in Barry’s memory. The Barry Barker Scholarship Fund helps future leaders of Dallas with their Leadership Dallas tuition.

Patti Clapp Scholarship Fund

For nearly 24 years, Patti Clapp served the Dallas Regional Chamber in a variety of critical roles, from Director of Leadership Development to Vice President of Education. As the Director of Leadership Development she led the revitalization of Leadership Dallas which contributed to the continued success of one of the DRC’s most significant programs. In honor of one of our longest serving and most impactful, effective, and influential leaders, we have established the Patti Clapp Scholarship Fund to help future leaders of the Dallas region with their Leadership Dallas tuition.


The Leadership Dallas Selection Committee reviews every completed application packet. They seek to identify those who are most likely to utilize their leadership abilities for the long-term benefit of our region. The committee seeks diversity in the class makeup (age, ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic factors are all considered.) In August of each year, the next Leadership Dallas class will be announced.

It is an honor to be invited to participate in Leadership Dallas. With so many qualified candidates from which to choose, the selection of each year’s class presents a difficult challenge. Many graduates of the program are not selected the first year they apply. Candidates who are not chosen are encouraged to apply again.
