Dr. Daniel K. Podolsky, President, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
Dr. Daniel K. Podolsky became President of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas on September 1, 2008. He had previously been the Mallinckrodt Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, the Chief of Gastroenterology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Chief Academic Officer of Partners HealthCare System.

The First Event of the Navigating Global Risk Series Hailed A Success

The International Business Council launched its newest programmatic initiative on September 30; a series titled “Navigating Global Risk” designed to educate North Texas businesses on the risks and opportunities associated with global commerce and how best to mitigate those risks and take advantage of the opportunities.The first event in the series focused on India and specifically addressed the foreign direct investment environment, pending regulatory changes impacting U.S. businesses in India and provided an overview of the investment opportunities in India. India provides a unique set of challenges and opportunities as presented by the speakers. The panelists all agreed that a critical component to success in doing business in India is having a trusted set of advisors with first-hand know-how on the ground. Additionally, understanding the local language complications and exhibiting patience and a strong and continued commitment to the market will take your business a long way in India.

The Navigating Global Risk Series, co-sponsored by Lockheed Martin and the University of Texas at Dallas,offers a calendar of programs scheduled through 2011. The Series is designed to educate North Texas executives on successfully competing in the international marketplace while mitigating the associated risks. Topics will range from country-specific programming to financial tools and policy know-how, and participants will include executives from a cross-section of industries. The Series will also offer continuing education credits.

The next event of the Series will address “A Best Practices Approach to Managing Foreign Exchange Risk” on October 14. Topics include: current market trends for foreign currency exchange (FX), goals of foreign exchange risk management, incremental approach to hedging, and the reasons behind foreign exchange risk management program failure are key factors to consider when doing international business.
