Company Bonding AND Giving Back

The Chamber has two initiatives in their workforce and education programming that are the perfect opportunities for you and your co-workers to give back to area schools together.

JOB SHADOWING PROGRAMS
Job shadowing serves to expose students to the many career choices and fields of work available to them post graduation. In a fun, fast-paced, four-hour time span, young people have a new perspective on their studies, as well as showing them a number of opportunities for their future. We match businesses and organizations with local students and provide all the tools necessary for a successful experience. Join us this year in showing students the ‘learning to earning’ connection. Becoming an education partner not only benefits our young people, it is good for business!

Chamber & DISD Investment
The Chamber is responsible for coordinating the schools, teachers, buses and businesses. Dallas ISD works to identify students who would benefit the most from this opportunity. This year, 8th grade students enrolled in Career Investigation classes focused on specific areas of interest have been chosen to participate.

Employer Investment
Businesses are asked to host at least 20 students for a half-day program. The students will be picked up by school bus at their school and arrive at the host organization by approximately 9:30 am. A school bus will return between 1:30 pm and 2 pm to take the students back to school.

As a Job Shadowing participant we ask that your company:

  • Plan interactive activities for the students
  • Provide lunch
  • $250 Bus Fee
  • Attend an informational session to meet your school contact and orient yourself with the job shadowing program and process
This fall the Chamber is also able to offer job shadowing programs for 9th grade students. If you would prefer to have students in the 9th grade instead of 8th grade, please let us know!

TEXAS SCHOLARS
The Chamber has supported the Texas Scholars program for years and each year it gets better. Company representatives deliver a prepared presentation to 8th grade students focused on increasing graduation rates and the importance of budgeting. The presentation also discusses various career options and the benefits of thinking about potential careers at an early age. Students are encouraged to make good decisions and to take rigorous coursework to help prepare them for their future careers.

Why is this program such a success? Students love hearing from those who see the workforce daily. This is your opportunity to encourage students to persevere through school and to challenge themselves by setting high goals for themselves.

Texas Scholars is a statewide effort through the Texas Business Education Coalition (TBEC) that utilizes the business community to communicate to local students. This year, participating business partners will collectively present to all 8th grade students within Dallas ISD - an impact of over 10,000 students.

How can you help? We have a few schools that still need to be adopted for the upcoming fall. Please see contact information below for questions or to sign up.

For questions regarding any of these opportunities, please contact Lindsay Ayers at lmayers@dallaschamber.org.
