DFW Airport and TDIndustries Highlight Energy Conservation Technologies

dfw airport and tdindustriesRegional sustainable technology executives gathered for networking and a discussion of two DFW-based organization’s energy efficiency strategies at the TBC’s recent Sustainable Technologies Networking Event. The event was held December 1
at TDIndustries.

The event included presentations by Rusty Hodapp, Vice President for Airport Energy and Transportation Management, DFW International Airport and Ken Scheepers, Account Executive, TDIndustries Inc.

Hodapp focused his presentation on addressing energy usage and the environmental impacts of buildings. According to Hodapp, "It’s the existing buildings, stupid!" that are the major causes of U.S. energy consumption and inefficiency. In addition, Hodapp outlined three "principles of energy efficiency including:

  1. Turn it off when you don’t need it. (Control solution)
  2. When you do need it, use it efficiently. (Technology solution)
  3. Only use as much as you need to get the job done. (Part load efficiency solution)”

Hodapp also spoke about the energy management strategy at DFW Airport. Through recent energy efficiency projects, "energy consumption avoided to date is estimated at over 25 trillion BTU," said Hodapp. These projects included terminal lighting retrofits, LED stop lights, and continuous commissioning of rental car facilities. Now the Airport has become a leading example for energy efficiency in DFW.

The second half of the event featured a live demonstration of TDIndustries’ utility monitoring technology. UtiliVisor is a facility management tool and service developed by TD which includes a “real-time, web based energy dashboard” designed to continuously calculate cost of operations for large commercial buildings. During his presentation, Scheepers highlighted a successful UtiliVisor project implemented at Texas Woman’s University which has significantly increased the organization’s energy efficiency in recent months.
