2009 Health Industry Size & Scope

INV_CommImpact_healthcare.jpgCurrently the total healthcare industry for North Texas is greater than the healthcare industry of 31 other states.  There are thousands of health industry establishments in North Texas with an estimated 316,500 jobs paying more than $10.4 billion in annual wages and salaries.  The Dallas-Fort Worth Region has an diverse healthcare industry with approximately 82% of all healthcare industry jobs being located in the service sectors, while public health accounts for 7% of the sum, and insurance carriers and manufacturing of health-related products represent around 4% of total industry employment.  Current statistics indicate that the healthcare industry employment rates continue to outpace other sectors of the Dallas-Fort Worth economy.  From 2001 to 2004 the general economy in the region declined 4.5%; while the service industry for healthcare alone grew more than 10.5%.

The North Texas Region is host to a plethora of world-class academic resources, retains several Nobel laureates, and maintains an outstanding record of research in biotechnology and nanotechnology.  The region is home to two nationally recognized medical schools (University of Texas Southwestern School of Medicine and University of North Texas Health Science Center), as well as Baylor School of Dentistry, Texas Tech School of Pharmacy, a school of public health, a Ph.D. program in nursing, Parker School of Chiropractics, degrees offered in health administration, and programs focused on biotechnology and nanotechnology.

The Dallas-Fort Worth Region is home to numerous leading hospitals, with more than 15,000 beds located in 90 facilities.  The Region also boasts premier technology-based companies with outstanding development and commercialization strengths in microelectronics, information technology, aerospace/defense, pharmaceutical & medical device development, and manufacturing.  Business development includes outstanding technology transfer offices, four business incubators, and numerous economic development entities to add quality companies to the industry.

The region is recognized for innovative solutions in healthcare as well as the growing and wide-ranging healthcare industry.  With a central location, excellent climate, outstanding transportation system, and high quality of life, North Texas will continue to attract top tier healthcare industry businesses as well as companies looking for high quality affordable care for their employees.
