The Dallas Regional Chamber's Sustainable Technologies Committee met with a Middle Eastern delegation on November 13th to discuss "Energy Security for the Future." The State Department's International Visitor Leadership Program hosted this delegation to foster educational exchange about "renewable and alternative energy sources, efficiency, conservation and best practices."
The delegation, comprised of business executives from Algeria, Iraq and the West Bank, briefed the Committee on the current energy situations in their respective countries and communicated their desire to further develop cost-efficient and renewable forms of energy.
Members of the Sustainable Technologies Committee present at the meeting included:
- Cindy Thyfault, President, Westar Trade Resources and Chair, Sustainable Technologies Committee
- Alan Ash, Systems Application Leader, Trane Commercial Systems
- Sam Hatcher, President, Liberty Holding Company
- Bill Short, President, AM-PRES Corporation
During a round table discussion, the Committee members shared their personal areas of expertise and discussed current and emerging technologies that are being implemented in the U.S.
Iraq, Algeria and the West Bank utilize primarily oil, coal and natural gas, yet they continue to face shortages in electricity, high energy costs, and pollution. Despite these challenges, they are exploring opportunities with solar, wind and other alternative forms of energy.
There is a great need for technical innovation and investment from foreign countries to make these ideas a reality. Germany is currently the number one exporter of energy and electric materials to the Middle East. However, the delegation encouraged companies in North Texas to continue developing renewable energy solutions and expanding their global presence.
